Volunteer liability put to test

COMMUNITY groups across Queensland face potentially crippling lawsuits if a landmark court case against the Volunteer Marine Rescue succeeds.

The claim by Bill Goodhue against the Voluntary Marine Rescue (“VMR”) highlights the grey area of protection of volunteers and the interpretation of sections 38 and 39 of the Civil Liability Act 2003 (Qld).

It’s a timely reminder of community groups to review their insurance, policies and protocols for organisation of volunteer work.
