QLS Symposium 2023 – Foreseeability & causation issues in emerging occupational diseases & cancers

I will present at the QLS Symposium 2023 – Foreseeability & causation issues in emerging occupational diseases & cancers on 10 March 2023.

The past decade has seen the reemergence of “Black Lung” and a range of silica-related diseases from engineered and manufactured stone products.
It has also heralded the introduction of workers’ compensation claims deeming certain cancers caused by occupations associated with firefighting as work-related.
Other diseases and cancers remain caused by occupations that do not fit into the known categories and are novel.
Using a pancreatic cancer case scenario, this session will work through novel factual foreseeability and causation issues under the Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 (Qld), before and after the July 2010 amendments.

Presenters:

  • David Cormack, Barrister, Queensland Bar
  • Dr Matthew Links, Medical Oncologist, Icon Cancer Centre

Chair:

  • Eduardo Cruz, Director, Corney & Lind Lawyers Pty Ltd; Member, Queensland Law Society Accident Compensation & Tort Law Committee
