Civil and Criminal Jurisdiction Reform and Modernisation Amendment Bill 2010

The Civil and Criminal Jurisdiction Reform and Modernisation  Amendment Bill 2010 was introduced to parliament on 13 April 2010, as stage 1 of the foreshadowed amendments.

The civil jurisdiction will be increased:

  • Magistrates Court $50,000 to $150,000
  • District Court $250,000 to $750,000


However, the bulk of the amendments are directed to criminal proceedings and committals.

The discussion paper regarding stage 2 of the reforms is now available.

For those with an interest in history, I recommend perusing “Annexure A” of the discussion paper with respect of the evolution of the Magistrates Court and the interrelationship of the Justices Act 1886 (Qld) and the Courts of Petty Sessions.
